Lane Cove Council – Creek Rehabilitation Works – Blackmans Park
Optimal Stormwater was engaged in November 2024 by Lane Cove Council to rehabilitate the Creek running through Stony Gully, draining into the Lane Cove River. The creek had previously been rectified by placing sandstone rocks into the channel, but high flows from storm events dislodged the rocks, causing further failure of the channel.
The site is draining a large catchment and has a very steep grade, so it is crucial to ensure the works provide a long-term solution for Council and prevent the need for ongoing rectification works.
Construction Manager Darren Hanley removed all dilapidated sandstone pieces and arranged them for re-use. New large sandstone blocks were installed into the creek at sequential locations perpendicular to the flow, providing multiple pooling zones within the creek to reduce the energy of the incoming water and slow the flow of water. These stones were keyed into the embankment via steel reinforcement and concrete to lock them into position, ensuring they stay put during large storm events.
We are very happy with the outcome of the works, our ability to re-use the existing materials on site and create a long-term, robust solution that fits in with the natural landscape.
